(1) SOFIA Cycle 1 Proposal Call Results Announced

The results of the Cycle 1 Proposal Call selection process were announced
on August 30. In response to the SOFIA Cycle 1 Call for Proposals, 172
unique proposals were received -- 133 to the US queue and 39 to the German
queue. Proposals to the US queue were received from 10 countries, with the
available time oversubscribed by a factor of about 5. The scientific
reviews were carried out separately for the US and German queues, and the
recommendations were consolidated by the SOFIA Director and Deputy Director
into the approved Cycle 1 program.

(2) SOFIA Tour during the 221st AAS Meeting in Long Beach
Date: January 6, 2013 from noon to 6 pm

A guided tour SOFIA aircraft and the NASA Dryden Aircraft Operations
Facility (DAOF) in Palmdale (2 hours by road from Long Beach) will be
offered to attendees of the 221st AAS meeting in Long Beach on Sunday
January 6, 2013.

The tour bus will leave Long Beach at noon from the main entrance of the
Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center (300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long
Beach, CA 90802).

Please note that no open-toed shoes or short pants are allowed inside the
DAOF facility; no exceptions. No one under 18 years of age is allowed on
the tour.

Security passes are required for entry into the DAOF. If you wish to go on
the tour, and you must reserve your seat by sending the following
information with the subject line of "Long Beach SOFIA tour" to Nick
Veronico (Public Affairs Officer, nveronico@sofia.usra.edu) no later than

(3) SOFIA Town Hall Meeting at the 221st AAS Meeting in Long Beach
Date: January 9, 2013, 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m.

We will hold "The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)
Town Hall" meeting during the 221st AAS Meeting in Long Beach. SOFIA made
its first scientific flights in 2010.  At the Town Hall, you will hear
about results and discoveries from SOFIA. We will also give a status of the
program and show you how you can get involved in this exciting new
observatory to enhance your own science. SOFIA has an expected 20 year
life time and an evolving instrument and science program. Recent
upgrades to SOFIA's present instruments and future opportunities for
innovative instruments will be discussed, and you will have an opportunity
to ask questions about SOFIA.
